BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (SKNLPCU) – Recent approval of new tax legislation by the Timothy Harris-led PLP/CCM/PAM government will impose further hardship on the small man or woman who rent apartments as well as those who own apartments and is part of the continuing deception by the three-party coalition.

The new tax legislation presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon. Timothy Harris in the National Assembly on Friday comes two months after Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas warned the people of St. Kitts and Nevis that Dr. Harris cannot be trusted.

Responding to the concerns of several callers on Freedom FM 106.5 on Wednesday, Dr. Douglas recalled that during the Budget Debate last December he warned the people of St Kitts and Nevis that in analyzing the Budget presented by Harris was the revelation that tax revenues was going to increase according to Harris by 40 percent.

“I said then, although it was not explicitly stated, the projected 40 percent could only be as a result of the following: a reintroduction of Personal Income Tax, an increase on the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate or there would be a whole suite of new taxes and revenue collection methods that this government was going to resort to,” said Dr. Douglas.

There are numerous complaints that teams of persons are going to private homes asking people whether they are renting apartments and how much they are paying or owners of apartments if they are renting and how much is the rent.

“I warned the people of St. Kitts and Nevis that you could not trust Dr. Harris. He (Dr. Harris) said there was going to be no new taxes. In two months within the fiscal year he has already imposed new taxes,” said Dr. Douglas.

“They are asking that information because if you are renting , the government is demanding to you pay EC$500 for a business license in order to rent apartments or a little apart of your house or a little apartment for which some people don’t even collect $500,” said Dr. Douglas.

“This is part of the deception of Timothy Harris as our Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, but I warned the people,” said Dr. Douglas, who added that VAT has to be paid on that as well.

He said there has been no public announcement from Dr. Harris and disclosed that persons are asking if they must give the persons who are knocking on doors information.

“You don’t have to. This is a free country. If people ask you your personal business and you don’t want to give them, you don’t give them,” said Dr. Douglas.

“This is ridiculous. It is part of the deception and that is why the people are saying ‘Harris must go’,” said Dr. Douglas.
