Basseterre, Saint Kitts, (Saturday 2 January 2016) – Cricket in the Leeward Islands has been in the doldrums for several years now and this is in large measure due to poor administration of the LICA Board and its member organizations. The Leewards Board continues to suffer from visionary and committed leadership to the sport by the executive who seem only interested in position for personal gain instead of implementing measures to resurrect the standard of Leewards Cricket to what it once was in the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s and early 1990’s.
It must be heart breaking to accept the level that our cricket has fallen to when the Leewads was the dominant team in the regional cricket competitions. The LICA Board has lost its way and despite the fact that a cricket loving Board is needed, I am not in support of Antigua’s Enoch Lewis who is very interested in the Presidency of the Board for several reasons, he is of the view that Antigua must go it alone, I am not convinced that Lewis is a team player and furthermore I am convinced that nothing would change for Lewis is a LICA representative to the WICB and one still realizes the late disbursement of financial support to LICA and to its members by extension.
On the other hand Auckland Hector the incumbent President who has held the position for awhile has been found wanting, despite under his watch signs of improvement began to surface a year ago. A proper LICA four day competition needed to be implemented to better prepare our players for the regional competition if Leewards are to compete seriously. However, in going forward I am in favour of electing a President who is totally committed to raising the standard of Leewards Cricket as opposed to one who has selfish ambitions. Let me remind you that whenever Leewards Cricket is strong so to is West Indies Cricket, I do hope that the various associations would keep the politics and bartering out of the election process and vote for the advancement of Leewards Cricket in the upcoming election.
