SKN PULSE, Saturday 27th June 2015 -Recent revelations by Honourable Marcella Liburd on popular talk show program Issues has created quite a debate across the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Inquiring minds care to know whether the denial of a security detail and the denial of duty free privileges for Dr. Douglas are driven by personal vendettas.
With that said, frustrating the Douglas led St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party has been the modus operandi as delay tactics in the appointment of the opposition leader, victimization and political grandstanding led to major rifts in the country. Thus causing the political landscape across the twin island Federation to be very tense. To complicate matters the political immaturity being exercised by the Team Unity led Administration doesn’t make things better. Seemingly, there has been more aggressive political interference into the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
According to Liburd, Former Prime Minister The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas was informed by the Ag. Commissioner of Police, Mr. Stafford Liburd that he would have to apply for a security detail. Interestingly, even if such acts as a requirement the norm should be to willingly grant security details to former prime ministers and governor generals since they would have been assigned previously.
A bad precedence has been set, especially when the former Prime Minister is still one of the most dominant political figures locally. With the present scenario, one has to ask, if the Opposition Leader who served as Prime Minister for 20 years cannot get a security detail then who is eligible?
Bearing this in mind and to add insult to injury, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas has also been denied duty free privileges. This clearly highlights the political immaturity that is being exercerised especially when one takes into consideration that duty free privileges are normally granted to parliamentarians on both sides of the political divide.
The general public would be looking on very closely to see if the Unity Government would enact laws to protect their Prime Minister and Governor General in the future with such measures. If so it would clearly highlight the vindictive and bad minded actions of the Unity Leadership which would only be deemed hypocrisy .
