Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 14, 2015 (SKNIS): More doors of opportunities for persons wishing to further their education have been opened with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government and SENECA College of Applied Arts and Technology in Canada.

John Allen, Honorary Consul of St. Kitts and Nevis in Toronto stated that this comes at an “opportune time considering that the Federations is at a stage in its economic development that requires taking the educational system and training development to another level.”

“As the Federation continues to position itself as the leading economy in the Caribbean, I think we are basically setting an example in terms of the model that we have created to provide training, support, resources for our young people,” said Mr. Allen.

He added that the agreement will be an important document going forward in terms of building relationships, not only  between institutions in St. Kitts and Nevis but also building on the strong connection which exists between Canada and the Federation.

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas agreed that the Government continues to move forward on its commitment to advance and expand the opportunities for training and education in the Federation. He reminded citizens that “education is one of the greatest liberators.”

“Indeed not only is education a great liberator it is to my mind the only true liberator,” stated the Prime Minister. “I say that because one can lose an inheritance, one can lose a home, property, one can indeed be wiped out by a stock market crash but if one is properly educated, if one has acquired and mastered a skill, then the opportunity to rebuild and to rebound is always at ones doorstep.

The opportunity to strengthen and build is always at ones fingertips and this is why I have come here today to open yet another door, to present another set of keys to provide yet another path to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for upward social mobility and the expansion of life’s chances.”

It is with this mindset and philosophy that the Prime Minister welcomed the MOU.

The agreement will result in SENECA and the Government developing a plan for the establishment of technical training programs for citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. It also will result in vocational teachers from St. Kitts and Nevis being trained at SENECA College. In addition, all qualified nationals have a chance to enrol.

The document was signed on December 22, 2014 in Toronto Canada and the official handing ceremony took place on January 13, 2015.

SENECA is a leading Canadian College providing Caribbean and International Students with career related education and training. It offers diplomas, degrees and post graduate certificates and is renowned for its quality education and is respected by employers.
